GENERAL REQUIREMENT
The University requires five [ 5 ] CREDITS including English Language at Ordinary Level (GCE, WASC, SSCE, NECO and NABTEB) for ALL courses and credit in MATHEMATICS at Ordinary Level for SCIENCE, SOCIAL SCIENCES, MANAGEMENT SCIENCES and EDUCATIONAL MANAGEMENT courses.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
1. FACULTY OF ARTS
A. Department of African Languages
M. A. Yoruba Literature & Culture.
Candidates for admission into the degree of M.A. Yoruba Literature and Culture must possess any of the following qualifications from Lagos State University or from other institutions recognized by the Senate of Lagos State University:
a. Bachelor’s Degree in Yoruba NOT below Second Class Division.
b. Bachelor’s Degree in Yoruba or Yoruba Education provided all core courses were taken and passed by such candidate;
c. B.A. Yoruba Communication Arts;
d. Candidates will be required to take a qualifying examination to determine their suitability for the programme.
Duration: Minimum of 4 semesters and maximum of 6 semesters.
B. Department of History & International Studies
1. M. A. in History and Diplomacy:
Candidates seeking admission into the M. A. History and Diplomacy are required to possess at least:
a. A good Bachelor’s degree in History and International Studies of the Lagos State University not below the Second Class (Lower) Division, OR
b. A Bachelor’s degree in History and its variants of any other University recognized by the Senate of Lagos State University, OR
c. A Bachelors degree in Humanities or Social Sciences adjudged as acceptable to the Department and the Senate of Lagos State University.
d. Five credit passes including English, History or Government at the ‘O’ Level as basic requirement.
e. Candidates must take and pass a (written essay) qualifying examination administered by the University.
DURATION:
M. A. History and Diplomacy runs for Four (4) Semesters and maximum of six (6) semesters (the final semester being fully devoted to writing the dissertation).
2. Masters in International Relations and Strategic Studies (MIRSS):
Candidates seeking admission into the Master’s programme in International Relations and Strategic Studies (MIRSS) shall possess any of the following qualifications:
a. A Second Class Lower Division Bachelor’s Degree from the Lagos State University or any other University recognized by the Senate of Lagos State University, OR
b. A Higher National Diploma (Upper Credit) or its equivalent with a Post-Graduate Diploma in International Relations and Strategic Studies of the Lagos State University, OR
c. A Third Class Bachelors Degree from any University recognized by the Senate of the Lagos State University with a Post-Graduate Diploma in International Relations and Strategic Studies of the Lagos State University.
d. Five Credit Passes including English at the ‘O’ Level as basic requirement.
Candidates will be required to pass a qualifying examination administered by the University.
Duration:
This programme runs for a minimum of six (6) semesters and maximum of eight (8) semesters.
3. Post-Graduate Diploma in International Relations and Strategic Studies (PGDIRSS):
Candidates seeking admission into the Post-Graduate Diploma programme in International Relations and Strategic Studies (PGDIRSS) are required to possess at least:
a. A Bachelor’s degree in History and International Studies of the Lagos State University at the Third Class Division OR
b. A Third Class Degree in History and its variants of any other University recognized by the Senate of Lagos State University OR
c. A Third Class Degree in Humanities or Social Sciences adjudged as acceptable to the Department and Senate of Lagos State University OR
d. A Higher National Diploma (Upper Credit) or its equivalent, or with Lower Credit with at least three years post-qualification experience.
e. Five Credit Passes including English at the ‘O’ Level as basic requirement. Candidates will be required to pass a qualifying examination administered by the University.
DURATION: This programme runs for a minimum of four (4) Semesters.
4. M.Phil. / Ph.D. History and Diplomacy:
Candidates seeking admission into the M.Phil / Ph.D. programme must possess M. A. in History and Diplomacy from the Lagos State University or any other recognized Universities with a CGPA of not less than 3.5.
Duration:Minimum of six (6) semesters.
5. Ph.D. History and Diplomacy:
Candidates applying for direct Ph.D. admission must possess a minimum cumulative GPA of not less than 4.0 at the M. A. level from the Department of History and International Studies of the Lagos State University. Holders of M. A. History from other Universities would be required to enrol for the M.Phil / Ph.D. programmes of the Department in the first instance.
DURATION: Minimum of six (6) Semesters and maximum of ten (10) Semesters.
C. Department of Religions
i. PGD Christian Religious Studies
An immersion programme for non-graduates of Religions to integrate them into studies for higher degrees in Christian Religious Studies.
Duration: Minimum of two (2) semesters and maximum of four (4) semesters.
ii. M.A Christian Religious Studies
Holders of first Degree in Christian Studies with at least Second Class Lower Division from Lagos State University or any other Universities recognized by the Senate.
Duration: Minimum of four (4) semesters and maximum of six (6) semesters.
iii. M.Phil. /Ph.D. Christian Religious Studies
a. Admission into the programme shall normally be given to candidates with M.A. Christian Studies.
b. Candidates with Master’s Degree with a CGPA of at least 3.5 of 5.0 point scale
c. All Candidates must demonstrate adequate intellectual capacity, maturity and effective decision making on problem-solving potentials.
Duration: Minimum of six (6) semesters and maximum of ten (10) semesters.
iv. PGD Islamic Studies
An immersion programme for non-graduates of Religions to integrate them into studies for higher degrees in Islamic Studies
Duration: Minimum of two (2) semesters and maximum of four (4) semesters.
v. M.A Islamic Studies
Holders of first Degree in Islamic Studies with at least Second Class Lower Division from Lagos State University or any other University recognized by the Senate.
Duration: Minimum of four (4) semesters and maximum of six (6) semesters.
vi. M.Phil./Ph.D. Islamic Studies
a. Admission into the programme shall normally be given to candidates with M.A. Islamic Studies.
b. Candidates with Master’s Degree with a CGPA of at least 3.5 of 5.0 point scale
c. All Candidates must demonstrate adequate intellectual capacity, maturity and effective decision making on problem solving potentials.
Duration: Minimum of six (6) semesters..
vii. Ph.D. Islamic Studies
The programme is open to candidates with 4.0 CGPA in M.A Islamic Studies and candidates with Master’s Degree of other recognized universities and whose transcripts are adjudged to be adequate or required to take courses as the Department may prescribe.
Duration: Minimum of six (6) semesters and maximum of ten (10) semesters.
D. Department of English
M. A. English
Candidates seeking admission into the Degree programme of M. A. English Language or M.A. Literature in English must possess:
a. Bachelor’s Degree in English Language, Linguistics or Literature in English NOT below Second Class Lower Division of Lagos State University or any other University recognized by the Senate of Lagos State University.
Duration: Minimum of four (4) semesters and maximum of six (6) semesters.
E. Department of Foreign Languages
Master in Translation and Interpretation (MTI)
a. M.T.I is a professional course. At least a Second Class Honours degree in French, Portuguese or Arabic from the Lagos State University or its equivalent from a recognised University. Graduates of Postgraduate Diploma from recognised institutions can also apply for the programme.
b. Candidates may be required to satisfy all Departmental requirements in a qualifying examination before admission.
Duration: Minimum of six (6) semesters and maximum of eight (8) semesters.
i. M.A. Arabic Studies
All candidates seeking admission into this programme must have obtained a first honours degree in Arabic or Islamic Studies or a combined degree involving either or both of the disciplines. Candidates whose first degree involves only Islamic Studies could be admitted provided that.
They can satisfy the department that they have a satisfactory level of competence in Arabic and Literature; or to be specified by the Department
Duration: Minimum of four (4) semesters and maximum of six (6) semesters.
ii. M.Phil. /Ph.D. Arabic Studies
Candidates seeking admission into this programme shall be subject to fulfillment of the minimum requirements specified by the Postgraduate School (3.5 CGPA), as well as satisfactory performance in the compulsory courses.
Duration: Minimum of six (6) semesters.
iii. Ph.D. Arabic Studies
Candidates must possess a good Master’s Degree in Arabic from a recognized University with a CGPA not below 4.0
Duration: Minimum of six (6) semesters and maximum of (10) semesters.
iv. M.A. French
Candidates seeking admission into M.A French Programme must possess:
a. Second Class Honours Degree in French or its equivalent from a recognized University.
b. However, candidates are required to satisfy all Departmental requirements in a qualifying examination before admission.
Duration: Minimum of four (4) semesters and maximum of six (6) semesters.
v. M.Phil./Ph.D. French
Candidates seeking admission into M.Phil/Ph.D. French Programme must possess:
a. A Master’s Degree with a CGPA of at least 3.5 of 5.0 point scale
b. However, candidates are required to satisfy all Departmental requirements in a qualifying examination before admission.
Duration: Minimum of six (6) semesters.
vi. Ph.D. French
a. Ph.D. is restricted to holders of an M.A. Degree in French from a recognized University with a CGPA not below 4.0
b. M.Phil./Ph.D. Degree in French.
Duration: Minimum of six (6) semesters and maximum of twelve (12) semesters.
F. Department of Theatre Arts and Music
POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES IN THEATRE ARTS
i. POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA (PGD) THEATRE ARTS
Candidates applying for the Postgraduate Diploma in Theatre Arts should have obtained a Bachelor of Arts (B.A) with Third Class or Pass or Master of Arts (M.A) degree of the Lagos state university or any other university recongnised by the University Senate in areas other than Theatre, Performing, Dramatic, Creative, Media, Communication and Language Arts. Such degrees should be from the Humanities, Law, Social Sciences, Management Sciences and Communication Studies and related disciplines. Candidate with Higher National Diplomas in the areas listed above with requisite working experience are also eligible for admission. In addition, prospective candidates are also expected to take and pass Postgraduate Qualifying Examination.
Duration: Minimum of two (2) semesters and maximum of four (4) semesters.
i. M.A. THEATRE ARTS
Holders of First Degree in Theatre, Performing, Creative, Dramatic, Visual, or Media Arts or other related disciplines with at least Second Class Lower Division of Lagos State University or other universities recongnised by the Senate of Lagos State University and holders of Postgraduate Diploma in Theatre Arts and related disciplines with Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.0 shall be eligible for admission. In addition, prospective candidates are also expected to take and pass the Postgraduate qualifying examination.
Duration: Minimum of four (4) semesters.
ii. M.Phil /Ph.D THEATRE ARTS
Candidates for admission shall be holders of First Degree (Honours) Second Class Lower Division. Admission into the programme shall be open to candidates with M.A. Theatre Arts, Performing, Creative, Dramatic, Visual or Media Arts of Lagos State University or any other University recognised by the Senate of Lagos State University.
Duration:The programme is minimum of six [6] semesters.
iii. Ph.D THEATRE ARTS
Admission into the programme is open to candidates with 4.0 CGPA in M.A. Theatre Arts programme of Lagos State University. Candidates with the Master’s degree of other Universities recognised by the Senate of Lagos State University and whose transcripts are adjudged to be adequate for the course shall be eligible for admission. Such candidates, however, may be required to take courses at lower levels as the Department may prescribe.
Candidate applying for the M. Phil/ PhD with background other than a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre, Performing, Creative, Media, Communication and Language Arts and Dramatic Arts shall be required to possess either a two year Diploma or one – year Postgraduate Diploma in any of the areas listed above. Prospective candidates are expected to present a proposal of study to the Department in addition to the qualifying examination.
Duration: Minimum of six (6) semesters and maximum of twelve (12) semesters.
Ph.D. candidates are expected to specialize in the following fields of the Theatre and Cultural Studies:

POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES IN MUSIC
(i) Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) Music
Holders of First Degree in Music with Third Class Division or a pass of Lagos State University and other Universities recognised by the Senate of the Lagos State University, holders or First Degree in other fields of study with at least Second Class Lower Division and holders of Higher National Diploma (H.N.D) in music with Upper Credit to take and pass postgraduate qualifying examination.
(ii) M.A. MUSIC
Holders of First Degree in Music with at least Second Class Lower Division of Lagos State University and other Universities recognised by the Senate of Lagos State University and holders of Postgraduate Diploma in Music with CGPA of 3.0 shall be eligible for admission. In addition, prospective candidates are also expected to take and pass postgraduate qualifying examination.
Duration: Minimum of four (4) semesters and maximum of six [6] semesters.
(iii) M.Phil/Ph.D DEGREE IN MUSIC
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS.
The M.Phil/PhD programme is 2 semesters minimum and maximum of 4 semesters. Admission to the programme shall be open to candidates with M.A. Music.
(iii) Ph.D DEGREE IN MUSIC
Admission into the programme is open to candidates with 4.0 CGPA in M.A. Music programme of Lagos State University. Candidates with the Master’s degree of other Universities recognised by the Senate of Lagos State University and whose transcripts are adjudged to be adequate for the course shall be eligible for admission. Such candidates, however, may be required to take courses at lower levels as the Department may prescribe.
M.Phil/Ph.D candidate adjudged as having satisfied the Departmental Board of Examiners in the M.Phil./Ph.D programme can be advised to proceed to Ph.D and the Registration made retroactive.
Duration: Minimum of six (6) semesters and maximum of twelve (12) semesters.
Areas of Specialization:
Ph.D. candidates for the Music programme shall specialize in one of the following areas:

2. FACULTY OF EDUCATION

a. Candidates with a Bachelor’s Degree of Lagos State University or other Universities recognized by the Senate.
b. Candidates with Higher National Diploma (not below Lower Credit) from recognized polytechnics or equivalents.
c. All candidates must possess at least five (5) credits at the Ordinary Level (G.C.E, WASC, NECO) at not more than two (2) sittings or Grade II Teacher’s Certificate in related subjects.
Duration: Minimum of 2 semesters and maximum of 4 semesters.
B. Department of Educational Foundations and Counselling Psychology
i. M.Ed Counseling Psychology
Candidates seeking admission into each of the programmes are required to possess
a. At least a Second Class Lower Division in Education of Lagos State University or any other University recognized by the Senate of Lagos State University.
b. Postgraduate Diploma Degree in Education in addition to a First Degree in other disciplines, such as Arts, Social Science and Sciences, from the Lagos State University and other similar institution recognized by the Senate of Lagos State University.
c. Third class honours in Education plus Postgraduate Diploma in Education at a credit level.

i Candidates with a minimum of 3.5 CGPA in Master of Education (in the area of specialization) from Lagos State University or any other University recognized by the Senate of Lagos State University.
ii. Candidates with a minimum of 4.0 CGPA in Master of Education (in relevant areas of specialization) from Lagos State University or any other University recognized by the Senate of Lagos State University.
In addition, Candidate must possess any of:
a. Five credit passes at O’ level or Teacher Grade II certificate including English Language
b. LASU Foundation Certificate
c. A pass in Mathematics is acceptable for Social Science Programmes. Meanwhile evidence of NYSC discharge certificate or exemption/exclusion certificate is a must for every candidate.
Duration: Six [6] semesters.
3. CENTRE FOR ENVIRONMENT AND SCIENCE EDUCATION (CESE)
i. Postgraduate Diploma in Environmental Education
a. Minimum of five (5) ordinary level credit pass which must include Mathematics and English Language.
b. Holders of HND with minimum of lower credit in Sciences and Social sciences based courses, recognized by the Senate of the Lagos State University.
c. Holders of minimum of Third class Honours Degree in Sciences and Social sciences based courses, recognized by the Senate of the Lagos State University.
Duration: minimum of Two (2) Semesters.
ii. Postgraduate Diploma in Environmental Resource Management
a. Minimum of five (5) ordinary level credit pass which must include Mathematics and English Language.
b. Holders of HND with minimum of lower credit in Sciences and Social sciences based courses, recognized by the Senate of the Lagos State University.
c. Holders of minimum of Third class Honours Degree in Sciences and Social sciences based courses, recognized by the Senate of the Lagos State University.
Duration: Minimum of Two (2) Semesters.

a. Minimum of five (5) ordinary level credit pass which must include Mathematics and English Language.
b. Holders of relevant first degree in Science and Social Sciences based courses with minimum of second class honours lower recognized by the Senate of the Lagos State University.
c. Holders of Third class Honours Degree in Science and Social sciences based courses plus Postgraduate Diploma in Environmental Resource Management or Environmental Education.
d. Holders of relevant Higher National Diploma (HND), Upper Credit in Science and Social Sciences based courses recognized by the Senate of the Lagos State University.
e. Holders of relevant National Diploma (HND, Lower Credit) plus Postgraduate Diploma in Environmental Resource Management or Environmental Education.
Duration: Minimum of Four (4) Semeste
iv. M.Sc in Environmental Education
a. Minimum of five (5) ordinary level credit pass which must include Mathematics and English Language.
b. Holders of first degree in Science and Social Sciences based courses with minimum of second class honours lower recognized by the Senate of the Lagos State University.
Duration: Minimum of Four (4) Semesters
v. M.Sc in Environmental Resource Management.
a. Minimum of five (5) ordinary level credit pass which must include Mathematics and English Language.
b. Holders of first degree in Science and Social Sciences based courses with minimum of second class honours lower recognized by the Senate of the Lagos State University.
Duration: Minimum of Four (4) Semesters
vi. M.Phil/Ph.D in Environmental Education/Environmental Resource Management.
a. Minimum of five (5) ordinary level credit pass which must include Mathematics and English Language.
b. Holders of first degree in Science and Social Sciences based courses with minimum of second class honours lower recognized by the Senate of Lagos State University.
c. Intending M.Phil/Ph.D students should have a Master’s Degree in Environmental Education/Environmental Resources Management from Universities recognized by the Senate of Lagos State University with a minimum of 3.5 for M.Phil 4.0 for Ph.D
Duration: The Minimum period of a full time study of M.Phil/Ph.D Degree shall be for eight (8) Semesters. Initial two (2) semesters for course work leading to conversion to Ph.D Students are required to register every session to maintain their studentship.
vii. Ph.D. in Environmental Education/Environmental Resource Management.
a. Minimum of five (5) ordinary level credit pass which must include Mathematics and English Language.
b. Holders of relevant first degree in Science and Social Sciences, based courses with minimum of second class honours lower recognized by the Senate of Lagos State University.
c. Intending Doctoral students should have a Master’s Degree in Environmental Education/Environmental Resources Management from Universities recognized by the Senate of Lagos State University with a minimum of 4.0/ 5.0 CGPA for Ph.D.
Duration: The Minimum period of a full time study of Ph.D Degree shall be for six (6) Semesters. Students are required to register in every session to maintain their studentship.
4. CENTRE FOR PLANNING STUDIES
i. Postgraduate Diploma in Planning Studies.
Candidates should possess any of the following:
a. Honours Degree not below Third Class in any discipline from Lagos State University or any other University recognized by the Senate of Lagos State University.
b. Holders of HND or its equivalent in any field from Polytechnics or similar institutions recognized by Senate of Lagos State University NOT below Lower Credit Division.
c. Any professional qualification like NIA, MTP, CIT, NIS, MVS and IOB.
d. Professional Certificate awarded in the Maritime and Aviation Industries certified to be equivalent to a first Degree or Higher National Diploma (by relevant authority).
Duration: Three (3) semesters
ii. Master in Urban and Regional Planning
The Masters of Urban and Regional Planning (MURP) Programme is organized as a professional programme
Admission into Masters of Urban and Regional Planning is open to the following categories of candidates:
a. Graduates of the Lagos State University or any other University recognized by the Senate of Lagos State University who hold a Bachelor of Social Sciences, Natural and Applied Sciences, Environmental sciences, Environmental Management Sciences, Engineering and Law Faculties.
b. Holders of Full Professional Diploma with a minimum of Lower Credit Level Pass in Town Planning, Estate Management, Surveying, Building Technology, Quantity Surveying, Engineering and Architecture.
