The National Youth Service Corps is to work with key stakeholders for the protection of Corps members during the gubernatorial elections in Edo and Ondo states.
Director-General of the Scheme, Brigadier General Suleman Kazaure, said this while answering questions from newsmen shortly after addressing Corps members at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Iyana Ipaja, Lagos.
Kazaure, who reaffirmed his commitment to the safety and general welfare of Corps members, said the Scheme would evolve better strategies in conjunction with relevant agencies with a view to ensuring that no harm went the way of any Corps member during elections.
On the continuing surge in Corps population, he assured that the Management and other stakeholders in the Scheme were poised to surmount challenges occasioned by such population explosion.
While addressing Corps members at the orientation camps in both Lagos and Ogun states, Kazaure reminded them of the need to use the platform of the NYSC to promote national unity and integration in line with the dreams of its founding fathers.
“This camp community is reflective of the diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds of the larger population of Nigeria. I urge you to begin promote national integration right from this camp by regarding one another as members of the same family; and to treating one another with love and respect.
“In fact, I will be very happy to see inter-tribal marriages taking place among you,” he said.
The Director-General enjoined them to appreciate and respect the cultures of their host communities, and to contribute to the progress of such communities through the NYSC Community Development Service.
In their separate welcome remarks, the NYSC Coordinators in Lagos and Ogun States Mr. Cyril Akhanemhe and Mr. James Afolayan said the orientation course was progressing smoothly in their respective camps.
