A Nigerian Masters student who has graduated with distinction from Robert Gordon University (RGU) in Aberdeen is also celebrating picking up an industry prize for his academic performance.

Ignatius Akpabio (23),graduated with an MSc in IT for the Oil and Gas Industry in July, and was awarded the BP prize for the best project on the course at the School of Computing Science and Digital Media’s annual awards ceremony.

Ignatius said:

“I feel very excited to have won this prize as I didn’t expect it and I’m very grateful to the best project supervisor anyone can have, Dr Iain Pirie, for been very supportive of me during the implementation of my MSc project.”

Ignatius decided to embark on the course due to its unique nature in the higher education sector, as well as the growing importance of the oil and gas industry in his home country.

“Oil and gas being the major source of GDP in Nigeria means that the future of the country might well depend on the sector,” he said. “I’m a strong proponent of the ‘Nigeria of Tomorrow’ and therefore, in every possible way I want to contribute my own quota to the development of my country.

“Coming from an IT background, I would like to use IT to develop and improve the oil and gas sector.”

He said: “Implementing the system was very challenging as it consists of a lot of functionalities. It was developed as a web application to aid authorized access from anywhere around the world as long as there is connection to the internet.”

Ignatius added: “The MSc course content itself is a very rich one which encompasses modules from core oil and gas engineering, petroleum geo-science and information technology.

“I have found my time at RGU very rewarding and the School, alongside dedication on my part, has helped me improve on my software development skills.

“Thanks to lecturers like Dr David Lonie and Dr Angela Siegel, I found software development very interesting and this enabled me to excel exceedingly well in both modules.”

Despite offers to stay back abroad, Akpabio has resolved to return home to pursue the Nigerian dream!

See How 23 Year Old Nigerian Student Was Stabbed In India While Waiting For A Taxi (Photo)

http://www.giststudents.com/2016/08/see-how-23-year-old-nigerian-student.html

23-year-old Nigerian college student identified as Bella was allegedly stabbed by a gang of five while she was waiting for a cab at Hennur, India on July 31.

According to Bella, who sustained a stab injury on her hand, the incident happened when she and her female friends were waiting for an Ola cab near Challakere Bridge at Hennur at 11.30 pm on that fateful day.

A car suddenly came to a screeching halt in front of them and a group of men alighted from the vehicle. They allegedly tried to strike a conversation with them, but police said it was not clear from her complaint what the conversation was all about.

According to police, the accused took out a knife and tried to stab on her abdomen, but Bella fought back and ended up sustaining a cut on her hand. The gang fled the spot when she was profusely bleeding and her friends raised an alarm.

Bella was taken to Live Line hospital and treated for her injury. She reported the case to the police and requested them to take action on the gang of five persons. However, police could not trace her after she was discharged from the hospital.

Deputy commissioner of police (East) N Satish Kumar said:

"We have taken up the case seriously and are investigating it. The attackers will be caught at the earliest."

According to Hennur police, Bella and her friend were heavily drunk and they were not in a position to tell where they were heading for. Taking advantage of their drunken behaviour, the gang may have sought sexual favours from them. That could have led to the stabbing incident, as per the police, Bangalore Mirror reports.

Though there is a CCTV camera installed nearby, the police could not obtain the registration number of the vehicle the miscreants had come in. When police visited the spot, locals told them that Bella and her friends are often found at the same place late night.

"We have contacted the Nigerian association and requested them to bring Bella so that we can get details on the appearance of miscreants and on what context the gang approached and what went wrong on that day. They have assured to bring her to the station and we are waiting." said Hennur police.

See What Dr. Victor Akinola Said About The Withdrawal Of 2016/17 JAMB Admission List

Withdrawal of 2016 JAMB admission list a national embarrassment, demoralising

Dr Victor Akinola, an educationist, on Wednesday criticized the withdrawal of admission lists by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) from tertiary institutions in the country. Akinola, who is the the Director, Information and Communication Technology at Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education, Ijanikin, Lagos, described the withdrawal as an embarrassment.

He spoke against the backdrop of the recent withdrawal of the 2016/2017 admission lists from tertiary institutions by JAMB. JAMB had on July 30 withdrawn the lists of recommended candidates for admissions earlier sent to the tertiary institutions.

Dr Fabian Benjamin, JAMB’s Head of Media had in a statement explained that the withdrawal was to ensure that the various university senates perform their statutory responsibility. “The withdrawal could have been avoided if the board had planned well before the scrapping of post-UTME.
“The candidates whose names had been sent earlier to the universities would definitely be demoralized. “This unfolding event could have been avoided if there had been proper planning by the board before the scrapping of post UTME,’’ he told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). “Democratically, universities should have an upper hand in determining the students to be admitted following the laid down rules and objectives.’’ The don said the opportunity now given to tertiary institutions to choose their candidates should have been the first thing to do before the post-UTME was scrapped.

According to Akinola, the federal government does not have monopoly in terms of admission of candidates into higher institutions. He noted that the federal government could only regulate admissions into its own institutions for balancing. “So also states, regions, individuals, corporate bodies, missionaries establish institutions for different motives and objectives. “The proprietors have their own focus and objectives that do not reflect the federal government’s interest.

Breaking News: IMSU Student Shot To Death [See Photos]

A student from Imo State University was shot to death

http://www.giststudents.com/2016/08/imsu-student-shot-to-death-see-photos.html

A student of Imo State University who's name is still Unknown was confirmed dead this morning. He was shot by unknown cultist.
A student told giststudents team that the guy who was shot is known to be a cult member, he also told us that the boy is a graduate from the department of Law. He was shot around 1:55pm on Wednesday 2nd August 2016 at Imsu extension gate.

This is the Reasons To Avoid Cultism In School
Because what shall it profit a man that he gains the world and losses his soul? The first pics was his last finest post, while the second was posted by other people without him knowing,  because he laid there lifeless. If this young man had known that just after his graduation, then by 1:55pm on Wednesday 2nd August he would be shot dead, he would have giving his whole life to God. He wouldn't have involved himself with any bad group.

http://www.giststudents.com/2016/08/imsu-student-shot-to-death-see-photos.html

But the funny thing is that death doesn't come warning for the unsaved, because they are like chess in the hands of the devil, he plays them how he want.
Pls let us remember the primary reason we are in the university. How will the parent feel when they hear that the son that they have been spending money to train died like this. Pls let us change from bad to good so that the society will be a good place fro every one

Anu Yusuf Marries And Graduates Same Day With A First Class Degree In Law

http://www.giststudents.com/2016/08/check-out-this-nigerian-student-that.html

A Nigerian Birmingham City University student has married and graduated, with a first-class degree, on the same day. Anu Yusuf, aged 26, received her Law LLB in a ceremony at Symphony Hall alongside hundreds of her fellow students on Wednesday 27 July, wearing a traditional cap and gown. However, merely hours before, Nigeria-born Anu was dressed all in white, as she tied the knot at Birmingham Register Office.

Wedding – Anu Yusuf and Joseph Kolawole Ola marry at Birmingham Register Office Wedding – Anu Yusuf and Joseph Kolawole Ola marry at Birmingham Register Office Anu and her now husband – Joseph Kolawole Ola, aged 27 – met four years ago in Gombe while working as part of Nigeria’s National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), and their subsequent engagement was prolonged as a result of her coming to study in the UK.

She said: “My husband often joked that he would whisk me away after my graduation to marry me because he can no longer wait. So, we decided to marry on my actual graduation day!

“Romance aside, it certainly worked well logistically too, as it meant that our relatives only had to travel once for both occasions. We both have family all over the UK and we were conscious of taking up too much of their time and for all the added expense in making the same journey twice.”

http://www.giststudents.com/2016/08/check-out-this-nigerian-student-that.html

Anu and Joseph’s wedding started at 10.40am with a civil ceremony at Birmingham Register Office. Following the official wedding photography, the entire party headed for a midday blessing at Anu’s church, VBCI Treasure Sanctuary, located at Perry Barr Methodist Church, north of the City.

The service finished at 1pm and all 50 guests were provided with take-away meals packaged up in gift bags. The wedding party enjoyed a traditional Nigerian meal on-the-go, including jollof rice with chicken served with salad, along with gizdodo (gizzard and plantain), moi moi (made from black-eyed peas), and poundo yam with vegetable soup.

Graduation – Anu Yusuf in her cap and gown outside Symphony Hall, before receiving her LLB Law from Birmingham City University Graduation – Anu Yusuf in her cap and gown outside Symphony Hall, before receiving her LLB Law from Birmingham City University

All meals were prepared by friends and members of Anu’s church, and drinks were brought by her husband’s pastor from Liverpool, whose wife also made their cake.

Anu added: “My husband and I created a notepad with our names on the front as a ‘thank you’ present for our guests to go in to all the gift bags, so along with all the food, the bags were quite bulky!”

Following a bite to eat, Anu quickly changed from her wedding dress in to another outfit and headed back in to Birmingham city centre for 2pm to collect her cap and gown before receiving her first-class degree.

Half of the wedding party accompanied Anu to Symphony Hall, although she was only allowed the maximum four guests into the actual ceremony, including her husband and two uncles, who were both wedding witnesses. Family members unable to sit inside the actual hall remained outside where they finally had time to enjoy the take-away wedding meal.

By 5pm, the graduation ceremony had come to a close and all Anu and Joseph’s guests were on their way home. “I’d be lying if I was say it wasn’t a relief to get to the end of the day, but I wouldn’t have changed it for the world. It was so special to have my family and friends present for not one, but two of the most significant milestones in my life, and being able to share it with them all is something that I will treasure forever.”

As well as her Law degree, Anu has supported her studies with part-time work at Birmingham City University, including a role most recently in the International Office there as a Marketing and Communications Assistant.
Parmila Murria is Assistant Director in Birmingham City University’s International Office. She said that Anu was at work just two days before her wedding, so her team gave her a suitable send off.

“Because she was so far away from her friends and family, and had little time to get everything ready, we decided to ease her nerves and have a little celebration of our own. We surprised her with a traditional English afternoon tea, complete with cucumber sandwiches and little cakes.

“None of us could quite believe that two days later she would be getting married and graduating all on the same day, but we were so happy for her and are really proud.” Anu hopes to further her studies by embarking on a PhD in Law and her husband is studying in Bradford at LIFE Church College.

HND-Bsc Dichotomy: National Council On Establishment Bridges Gap

HND-Bsc Dichotomy: National Council On Establishment Bridges Gap

It was learn t that the National Council on Establishment has resolved that the entry point for HND holders into the civil service would henceforth be Grade Level 08, just like their bachelor degree holder counterparts.

This is in a bid to end the HND-BSc. dichotomy.

The Council equally approved the postgraduate diploma (PGD) as the bridge programme for holders of the Higher National Diploma (HND) to rise to the peak of their career just like their degree holders counterparts.

Before now, a polytechnic graduate with HND cannot be employed into the civil service on Grade Level 8 and cannot rise beyond Level 15 without additional qualifications (including a master’s degree), while a bachelor’s degree holder enters on Grade Level 08 and can rise to the peak at Grade Level 17 (equivalent of the Permanent Secretary cadre).

If a HND holder aspires to get to that level, he/she will have to obtain a PGD in relevant disciplines and also obtain a master’s degree before attaining the level a bachelors’ degree holder could attain, even without a second degree.

However, with this new development, HND holders will only need to acquire postgraduate diploma in relevant field from an accredited institution/university to attain the same status with their university graduate counterparts.
